Woven Kilims are some of the finest rugs on the market. Given their type of weave this makes them a desirable rug. Additionally, the wool grade is an added value to the rug. As wool is becoming more difficult to find throughout Asia and New Zealand this has driven up the price of the rug.
Wool: The primary material used for weaving Navajo kilims is wool. Wool from sheep, especially from Navajo-Churro sheep, is commonly used because of its durability and ability to hold dyes well. Wool also gives the kilim a soft, pliable texture that is ideal for weaving intricate patterns.
The rug has wear and holes through the field
Given their cultural value and often intricate craftsmanship, restoring and maintaining Navajo kilims requires expertise. Over time, even the most durable kilims may show signs of wear, especially if they have been heavily used or are very old.
Jafri Rug Restoration will do the following:
Cleaning:
Gentle Cleaning is essential for preserving the fibers and colors. Using harsh chemicals or cleaning methods can cause the colors to fade or damage the wool. Professional dry cleaning or washing with mild soaps and water is recommended.
Vacuuming with a low-suction vacuum is often used to remove dirt and dust without disturbing the delicate fibers.
Repairing Damaged Areas:
Reweaving or patching may be needed for areas with wear, holes, or fraying. Skilled artisans will carefully match the original design and weave to restore damaged sections without altering the original look.
Edge Repairs: The edges of Navajo kilims may need reinforcement to prevent fraying and maintain their structure. This is especially true for kilims that have been used extensively.
Color Restoration:
Dye Matching: If the kilim’s colors have faded or become discolored over time, dye restoration is performed. This process requires matching the original dyes as closely as possible to maintain the rug's authenticity.
Protecting the Kilim:
Rotation: Periodically rotating the kilim can help ensure even wear and prevent certain areas from becoming excessively worn due to heavy traffic.
Storage: If the kilim is not being used regularly, proper storage is key. Kilims should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity, to prevent any further damage.

I bless the day I found Mr Jafri. As one who has collected rugs for 50 years, I both learned about their value and origins and had them beautifully cleaned and repaired.
Very beautiful rugs there, would have been a difficult decision. Only needed a rug pad this time. When we're in the market again, this is where we'll go. Pete, Delmar, NY
