This is a chinese art deco rug made in the early 1940s. Although considered quite influential, these rugs are influenced heavily from the Ming and Chou Dynasty rugs dating back to the 5th century BC. The rugs are typically either threadbare or thick pile and have peonies, dragons, and flowers and often reflect competing motifs.

Given the enormity of the damage to this rug Jafri Rug Restoration had to call upon their master weavers to finish the garden motif in the rug and redo the entire bottom portion of the warp and weft. The rug was made with chrome dyes and required the same dye lot as previously used in circa 1900.
